Treatment of Pea and Bean Seed

Slurry treatment (slurry) is used for the protection against pests and fungus diseases.

For better adhesive strength, "stickers" are added to the treatment., in the form of polymer binders.

In the year 2005 and later, the following chemical treatments will generally be available. Their application and permission for sale are depending on the rules and regulations of the U.S. government.

Treatment: Allegiance ® FL (metalaxyl)

The original formulation (both the S and R isomers) of the systemic fungicide metalaxyl. Shown to be more effective than Apron XL in many crops. Used to specifically control Pythium and Phytophythora and downy mildew at higher rates.

Allegiance is bbelieved to affect RNA Synthesis in Fungi.

Typically used at rates of 0.75 oz/cwt. for ythium and Phytophthora and 1.5 oz/cwt. for downy mildew. Consult the label for specific applications.

LD 50 2,900 mg/kg or 1315 mg/lb

Registered on beans, carrots, sweet corn, cucumbers, garden beets, peas, and spinach.

Treatment: Captan ®

A broad-spectrum fungicide designed to protect seeds from seed-borne and soil-borne fungi, which cause damping-off, seed decay and seedling blights.

Captan has multi-site activity against many fungi classesby disrupting basic metabolic pathways in fungi.

Consult label for specific rates.

LD 50 10,000 mg/kg or 4536 mg/lb.

Registered on beans, beets, cole crops, sweet corn, cucumbers, crucifers, peas, peppers, spinach and squash.

Treatment: Maxim ®

Broad-spectrum seed treatment fungicide for potatoes, corn, soybeans, vegetables and other crops. Maxim ® is based on fludioxonil with its unique mode action.

Treatment: Apron XL ®

Systemic seed treatment fungicide to control seed and soil-borne diseases such as Phythium spp.- Phytophthora spp. and downy mildews on cotton, sunflower, soybeans, peas and many other crops.
